Hi, My basement storage room has a drain in it. On Christmas Eve we had water backing up through this drain. The next day we had the septic tank drained. Then we noticed the basement toilet wasn't draining well still. Then the storage room drain still had some water backing up We thought there might be a plug from the basement line to the septic tank so we rented an auger and there was seemed to be no plug and no change. After talking to some people we concluded that there might be some plugging in the drain field. The weather here in Rexburg Idaho was quite cold -20 for several weeks. We don't know if there was something knocked down or it is frozen. We stopped using any water in the basement and showers instead of baths and just living with it backing up in the storage room. Is there anything we can do to try and fix this on our own? We have no money for a plumber. Will we have to wait until in is all unthawed to even try and fix it? Yikes, -20, that is cold enough to freeze yer pipes. If the septic drain is not below the perma line then that will start to back things up. Running a roto through to the tank indicates that there is freezing in the tank and the leach field is shallow enough to where it does not function in the cold either. That is a tough one to figure. A septic guy could probably help a lot quicker than a plumber and a lot cheaper too. I really have no solutions from a distance. Just opinions. Getting an insulated cover over the tank area might help. nm
