backerboard use in tile shower underlayment

In reading the steps to redo the floor of my shower I see that after I mortar the slope, install the pan liner, it says I am supposed to put another layer of mortar on top. Can I use cement backboard instead of another layer of mortar? It would seem like that would be easier to get a smooth consitent finish.

Thanks
