I'm new to SLRs and I was wondering if any or all of these lenses would be compatable with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT:

Canon FD 28/2.8 Wide Angle Lens

Canon FD 50/1.8

Sigma 75-300 F 4.5-5.6

I'm pretty sure they are, but the person selling them said "Please note that these are FD model lenses" and I wasn't sure if that made any difference. Maybe I'm being completely dim, but I'd rather check before buying any of them.

Generally one wouldn't invest in FD lenses if starting from scratch. You're better off staying with EF lenses offered today. For your camera you can get EF-S lenses as well. Bare in mind that if you do decide to get an EF-S lens and you later decide to go a to a non-rebel Canon DSLR then your EF-S lenses will not work. Only EF mounts will work with EOS non-rebel models.

I personally own the Canon 10D (still) and I have several EF lenses including an L class 70-200 which by far has the best quality lens in my collection. I also own Sigma 50-500 and 15-30. If I had to start over I'd spend the extra money and get myself a Canon EF lens instead of Sigma. I don't have a choice since I can't use EF-S lenses but if I did I would seriously consider the (EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM) which is a great all around indoor lens or spend the extra money and get the (EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM).

Once you use an L-Class lens you'd never want to try anything else. The picture quality is a cut above. When I first started photography I never noticed the difference to tell you the truth but with time, experience, and 1000's of photos, it is clear to me now how important it is to have the right lens.

There is also nothing wrong with going on the less expensive lens side when you're starting. It is a good way to learn

Are FD lenses compatible with Canon's digital EOS cameras? I would have to say 'no'. The EOS system, from the beginning, has been using autofocus lenses. FD lenses are not autofocus lenses. I do not own any FD lenses but would question if the FD lenses would even mount to a newer EOS camera. Stay with lenses made for your camera.
