My roller derby team is trying to decide how to form our organization. A lot of others are formed as LLC's, but a few are non-profits. We are leaning torward the non-profit. We're not sure wherther to form as a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(7). I know with the first the group must foster national or international competitions, and I am thinking we qualify because we will be competeing with other leagues all over the US and that donations are tax deductible for the donor. We pay monthly dues, and also have fundraisers to raise money for rink time, safety equipment, travel expenses etc., and we are also going to be receiving money from sponsors. The problem we have with being a LLC is that no one really wants to be a member in the LLC. I guess I am just looking for advice on how we should organize.
