Sign on Bonus

I recently received an employment contract which stated that I will receive a sign on bonus of "$3,000, net of withholdings". Does this exact terminology mean $3,000 net, after taxes are withheld or $3,000 gross? Where can I find something in writing as to the exact meaning of this phrase?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
