payroll sick time

On last week I had worked a day but I noticed that there was a circle on my time card for that day. So I waited for my paycheck to see what was going on with the circle, so when I got my pay I noticed that there was sick time taken from my pay. So I went to the vice principal and asked him what was going on. He didn't know so he sent a email to the schools payroll clerk. She said that she was informed by my supervisor that I wasn't coming in that day. Since there was a discrepancy should she have tried to find out if I was there instead of taken a day from my sick time. Is this legal for her to do? If not what can I do about it?
