Out of state living expenses

I am from Alabama currently working in Texas on a contract basis. Typically most contract agencies will break out per diem based on the area. If the company I intend to work through does not perform this function, how difficult is it to recover this expense on your federal taxes? Is there a disadvantage, other than not getting reimbursed up front, to doing it this way?

Thanks
