how do you caluculate a paycheck in the hole

If we are telling new employees that their first paycheck will be in the hole how is that calculated? For instance, if a pay period ends on the last day of the month and the employees start date was the 12th of the month, but the first pay date is the 8th of the folllowing month what dates would they get paid for? Would it be the 12th thru the 15th or the 16th thru the end of the month?
