How to deal with visit to Adult daughter with stepkids drinking again?
My daughter who has been through 2 rehabs and extended stays at half-way houses and sober-living places was sober for a couple of years. She recently married a non-drinking guy with 2 children who have lots of troubles on their own. My daughter recently started drinking again; couldn't stop on her own; so went to her dad's for a week and stopped. A month later she is drinking again. She would like me to visit over the holidays - and I wanted to until I realized she's drinking. I want to love and support her and her family -but not her drinking. I don't know how to do this. If she's still drinking, she'll be drinking everyday. Any suggested articles to read?

There is a book I often recommend for relatives and friends of treatment resistant problem drinkers:

Get Your Loved One Sober: Alternatives to Nagging, Pleading, and Threatening by Robert J. Meyers and Brenda L. Wolfe. The book is based on a process called CRAFT (an intervention method).

I believe you should be able to find this at any public library. It is also available through SMART RecoveryŽ for Family and Friends. Website here.

Very frustrating to deal with but relapse is to be expected. It's the rule and not the exception. I wish you luck and hope this helps.

Has she gone to AA meetings as well as rehab? With the AA meetings, she would be a LIFETIME member. She would continue going to meetings even AFTER clean. And it would help her STAY that way.
