Would a recently deceased close family member's visit scare me?

Asked Oct 14, 2011, 07:01 PM — 2 Answers
My dad recently passed away, less than 2 weeks ago, at the age of 70, from head and neck cancer. He had found out only one week prior that the radiation he had received, did not kill the cancer cells and that he only had a short time to live. We were all devastated as was he. He ended up staying at a hospice, where he lived only one week. We were all around his bed as he took his last breaths and passed away. Just last night, at around 1:30 am, my husband freaked out because he said he heard 4 deep breaths coming from the corner of our bedroom. He woke me out of my sleep and was very scared and upset. I do not think my dad would try to scare us. Should I be concerned that this was not my dad visting or be worried for my husband, who has always had a 6th sense?

Hi Marsha,

Firstly let me say that i am so sorry for the loss of your Father.
I don't think for a moment that he would scare you like that.
When you loose a close family member, all kinds of emotions are going on in your head, what might just be any simple noise at night, can send your imagination into over-time mode.I'm sure that you've not had your regular sleep and that the both of you are over tired.

I really would not worry about this, give it time. When you can accept the loss you have all suffered, you will be more calm and your sleep pattern will be of quality sleep and not just under the surface anxious sleep.

Temporarily i would have a small nightlight on,which will take away complete darkness in your bedroom, this will prevent you from making things that are not there out of shadows.

It will also be very comforting.

Of course your father would not want to scare you. I'm sorry for your loss. But there is the old saying "Once daddy's little girl, always daddy's little girl". He could just be there to watch over you and make sure your alright and protect you from the things he couldn't when he was alive. Though his body is dead, he soul lives on, our bodies are just an outter shell. We can't always take care of what goes in or out, so your father might be there to help protect if anything bad decides to go in.
