Your best shot is to go to the local library, and search the old newspapers and such for deaths at that residence, or of the people that lived there.

If you do find something (and a search engine is helpful too), you could try going into the house if you still can, and try a simple conversation. Until you have tried one or both ideas, there is little information to give you.

Do some reasearch to see if the claims are true, Reyak is right the bes place to start is your local libary and if you cant find anything with your house look at surrounding houses.

The biggest thing that stands out there is the fact that you said people don't stay there long...It could very well be haunted. Try going to the library or the records place in that area and see if you can find anything. Remember that it doesn't have to be that house, look for local deaths in the area, being a paranormal investigator, we see this a lot. It's not necessarily the house that a person dies in, it could be the area as well.

Kids often over hear their parents talking, especially if the death could have been in the local newspaper. That kid could be right, they could've over heard people gossiping about it and teased him for it knowing that you guys now lived there.

Also if things have happened to your mom and your brother, then that could be an indication that something was there, or is still residing in that house.
