My family has lived in a house for 15 years. It has been in the family for a long time. We have alot of strange things happen. Doors slamming, electronic devices turning off, pictures falling off walls, and a spirit that only shows herself to my children. How can I find out who it might be?
Do you have a land titles office near to where you live? If you're not sure, call your local city or town hall. The land titles office could tell you the names of all the people who have owned the house from the time it was built. Once you have the names, you could search through old newspapers at a library, especially searching for obituaries and news items featuring any of the names. If you find that any of the people who lived in your house died suddenly or violently, that might be a clue as to the haunting. You could also search especially for the address of the house in the papers, to see if it had ever made the news. If the name(s) of those who owned the house are still found in your local phone directory, you could also call people to see if they are relatives, and they may be able to give you some information or clues.
Also, if you trust mediums or clairvoyants, you could hire one to come into the house, and hopefully get some names or information for you as well. Good luck!
As far as who has lived there in the past, the answer before mine is very good. Your local Court House is the place to start. There will be deeds, etc, in the Court Clerk's Office.....just ask them for help.

The best way to tell what type of entity you have is the way it behaves. Earthbound souls are cold and smell of rotting food or sulphur. Souls from heaven are warm to hot and often give of scents that you would associate with them like perfume, cigar smoke etc.

It has been my belief that what people so easily call ghosts are in reality demons. Since I have not yet died myself, I can't say for sure what happens. However, the bible compares death to sleep and those who have died and been revived have told of going into a glorious bright light. So, if your dead you are either asleep or you're in God's presence. Not haunting people. The demoniac was a problem when Christ was in the world and they still are. They exist wherever they have a legal right to be. They will stay until their rights are removed. The demons must be sent away and removing demons is simple and secondary to spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. (See Mark 16: 15-18)
