Why i Mam getting extension to files?

I am getting extensions names for all types of files in my computer [ex: .doc for word files (ex: word files with name "smith" appears as "smith.doc", i mean ".doc" should not appear), .hmt for web files (ex: file with name "manu" appears as "manu.hmt"), .ppt for power point presentation files (ex: file with name raghu appears as raghu.ppt), .pdf for PDF files (ex: file with name umar appears as umar.pdf] . I want to know is it because of virus problem. If so how to overcome this problem. I will be grateful, if any one could solve this problem.

I am very much fed up from this problem.
