Replacement of MS Word

Can anyone suggest a replacement of MS Word. I am using HP PC with XP.

The MS Word I am using often "hangs" when I am trying to call it out while I am using
internet.

I installed the free OpenOffice Word program downloaded but find it not as good as the
MS Word although not a bad idea as temporary replacement.

Also, please tell me how to insert Header (or Footer) in an OpenOffice Word document.
I want to have the Filename and the page No. displayed as header (or footer) so that I can locate the file in future by merely looking at the print-out.

The replacement should be as good if not better than MS Word and should be free downloaded from the net. (The MS Word I am using was installed by the PC vendor
and I don't know how to re-install it hoping that the hanging problem will go away. It
would be a good idea if I can download it from the net and installed.)
