Hi,
First, any good antivirus will require getting updates, every now and then. As new viruses are developed and start to spread, any good antivirus program must keep up with them; with "definitions" to download to either stop them, or scan your computer to get rid of them.
If your computer is "stand alone", not connected to the net, then about the only way you can get a virus is by using an infected floppy disk, or using a CD that has infected files on it.
I suggest using AVG; from http://www.grisoft.com.
You have to use another computer connected to the net, then download the free version (if you want the free version). Then, burn it to a CD-R or whatever. The file will be the execute file, to install the program.
Take the CD-R to your computer, copy the file to your harddrive, then start the installation.
To do the updates, say weekly; you will have to use another computer, download the update file, burn it to a CD-R, then copy that to your own computer's harddrive, and install it. At the website, under the heading "Downloads", will be a link to "Updates". That page shows the last update file you can download.
I do wish you the best, and good luck.

I'd probably get shot for this but...

I would say don't put a virus scanner on it. After all, if the PC is not connected to the internet or a network then the only place the virus can come from is disks you put into the machine. If you just make sure that all disks going in are clean, you are fine. Just install a scanner at the start to ensure the PC is clean from the word go, then remove it once you are sure it is. After all, if a virus pops up a month down the line, who's to say it wasn't there from the start.

But if you do want a virus scanner, there are free ones: AVG as Fred mentioned; Avast is the one I prefer. No idea on the speed though.

I did find these though: http://www.nod32-av.com/compare/Comp...20Products.htm
http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4520-66...1.html?tag=txt

The first one could be biased but I have tried Nod32 before and I really liked it. The protection it gave was excellent.

HI,
I was afraid to suggest not using an antivirus program on it; afraid I would be shot, too. But, I do agree with LT about it. If whoever you get the disks from will run a scan on them first, you might not need it.
But, personally, I would rather "play it safe" and use it. It's a matter of opinion.

In the past the primary way that virus were distributed was thru infected floppies. Now its done primarily by sending e-mail files across the Net. Therefore, if you have a truly stand alone PC the need for an A/V is minimal. An A/V that is not updated is useless anyhow.

As long as you are very careful about what disks you put in your machine, then I would say an A/V is not necessary.

Hi,
I do agree with the answer before this one. If you aren't going to the "trouble" of downloading the update difinitions from another computer, then burn them to a floppy or cd-r, and install them in your computer, then the antivirus program will do you no good. New viruses come out quite often.

Not to mention that the CD you put the definitions could have a new virus on it that would then infect your PC before you could load the definition on. Oh the irony

Hi,
You really don't need to place the latest update file in the AVG download folder from the internet.
Make a new folder, such as c:/AVG updates.
Then, when you put the CD with the latest update in your computer, copy the file to your folder, such as the C:/AVG Updates.
These following steps only have to be done once:
Open AVG
Click on Update Manager
Click on the Properties button
Click on the Properties tab (should already be opened to it)
Uncheck "Do not ask for update source"
Click on Apply, then OK
The above then will ask you where the update file is, and not automatically try to connect with the internet.
Then, every time you update the file, use these steps:
Right click on the AVG icon, in the system tray by the computer clock.
Left click on "Check for Updates"
Click on the Folder button
Then, scroll to the C: Drive, then scroll to your folder name.
Left click on the folder, then click on OK.
It then should update itself from the file you added to that folder.
Best of luck.
