A friend of mine in high school did something similar to this (heck it might even be the same thing). during the summer she would travel to country with a group of other students and would live in that country for the whole summer. She went to Russia one summer and Australia the next. I remember thinking it was really cool. She always had a lot of fun and they got to do some fun stuff and they learned a lot about the countries they lived in.

It is a great opportunity. Anytime you get to see the world is a great opportunity. You meet the most interesting people and get to see the coolest stuff. Once people hear you are American they get pretty excited. If its a country where they don't speak English they love it because they get to practice their English on you. I've never run across an unfriendly person in another country.

If you want to hear about someone fearless - a guy I used to work with quit his very high paying job to go backpack around the world for 2 years! He had the coolest experiences and met the most interesting people and pretty much had a journey that he will be able to talk about for years.

If you want to look at his blog here is the link

Where In The World Is Fio

He has really cool pictures and everything.

You shouldn't let a fear of planes stop you from a cool adventure. The discomfort of a few hours on a plane is worth the adventure. Plus from what I remember from my friend who did this same program they would all fly on the plane together. So it was like a big flying party. With everyone chatting and having a good time.

Glad to help. You should never let the fear of the unknown stop you from an adventure. I live by the following Zen saying "Leap and the net will appear". Meaning if you put effort into taking a chance something will put the effort into you succeeding.

If it is a reputable agency it can be a great experience. I know several kids who have done this. I have been on the recieving end of it. Over the years my family has hosted 5 students that stayed the year.
