I know Emo as being short for Emotional..its the current style craze for school-age kids.

bascicall they all hate pink, love black and listen to depressing music...lol ok thats purely a stereotype, but this site will really help you out in understanding better;

I tend to view Emo as a complete style, not just the music. Some people try to say Emo's are just gothic, but I strongly disagree.

To me emo is basically a trend of Punk....I am not really sure what the difference is though...hah.

Emo's are more outwardly emotional with their expressions...You see guys and girls with dark eye makeup trying to look sad or just dramatic... From what I can tell Emo's are not supposed to look happy... Weirdness...

Ok well good luck on better understanding Emo..I personally dont take to the style.

I'm personally no expert, but my step brother is emo and so I asked him and he said that they are people who take whatever emotions that they feel to an extreme... not just sadness or anger, but any kind of emotion that they feel. they express it by either sulfing in their bedrooms all the time (if their sad), hanging out with their friends and doing things that are fun (if they're happy) or just doing nothing (if their boared). I know it sounds contradictory to alot of the responses that you've gotten previously, but this is almost word for word from someone who is emo... (hope that helps)
