Downloading Security On A New System

I have recently purchased new gateway computer. It came loaded with McAfee internet security and Mcafee spyware. It also came with Nortin internet security 2005, webroot spy sweeper, webroot window washer, pre-empt and ghost surf 2005. When I tried to load these in I had an internet connection and after loading them I could not establish an internet connection. I called Gateway and they told me to disable the Norton firewall, this worked until I closed and restarted the computer, then I could not get on the internet. I called Gateway and they told me to uninstall all the security and get rid of the two Mcafee programs, then add the four others and Norton last. the other four loaded and when I went to add Norton, I got a fatal error and a bunch of other errors. What do I do. Should I reboot the entire eomputer from the recovery system, use the Mcafee and add the other four or get rid of the Mcafee as I was told, then add Norton, disable firewall and add the other four? I am confused and am getting no help from the Gateway site, just the run around.

We got this computer because our other was too slow, thinking about going back to the old system!!!!

Whoever boxed up that computer/software combo was on crack.

Actually, I have no idea what particular type of mind-altering substance Gateway is abusing at the moment, but installing both Norton and McAfee security suites and running their services concurrently probably isn't the best idea. I bet Gateway is getting a ton of calls about this. You can thank them for their incompetence in this matter.

When you say norton threw out a "fatal error and a bunch of other errors," do you really expect us to be able to tell you what could be wrong? You need to post the exact error message. All of it.

With the very sparse information you have given me, I would say screw Norton and just install the rest. Be sure to test the firewall.

Mcafee spyware
Okay, for the record, McAfee does not market Spyware. It is Anti-Spyware...

Security on a new system

As said by psi42, Norton and Mcafee on the same PC?

Many years ago I installed an anti virus product onto my new PC configeration, only to have the monitor go into LSD mode.It looked very John Lennon.Did nothing for my temper though.

I called up the company where I purchased my PC,and told them what had happened.Ah,was the reply. That copy of anti virus clashes with the one we'd already pre-installed!!

Always think carefully when loading security features onto your PC.Like me,you've learned the hardway. But learn you have.

All the best with your new system,
Nez.

Gateway

Hi,
I also use a Gateway, but it isn't new!
My suggestion is to go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs.
Uninstall ALL the programs you have referred to; re-booting after each one.
Then, install the Norton (Opinions do vary on Norton, but I have never had any trouble).

After installing Norton, re-boot, open Norton Antivirus, and let it do it's Live Update; getting all the Antivirus Definitions. Do it 3 or 4 times., then re-boot.

After that, do not re-install any of the other software you mentioned, until you are sure your system is running good.
Then, you can either install one of them at a time; run the computer for awhile.
Or, you can install the following Spyware/Advertising programs that run well with any Antivirus Program: and included are instructins for running them.

http://www.security-related.com/download2.htm
Download: SpyBot Search & Destroy; 1.3

AdAware at:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Download: AdAware_SE

CWShredder at:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
(CWShredder is intended only for removal of CoolWebSearch files; placed as spyware on the harddrive). It is not a "stand alone" scan, but needs to be run. Download the free version by clicking on "Download stand alone version of CW Shredder".

All 3 of the above programs run better and much faster when run in SafeMode.

To get into SafeMode:
Re-boot the computer, and immediately after starting up, Press and hold down, F8, at top of keypad.
When the options show on the screen, use the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard to select
"Safe Mode".
Press Enter

It's best to run the AdAware scan first; 3 times; then re-boot.
Then, run the AdAware scan again 3 times; then run the SpyBot. Then, run CWShredder.
Re- Boot.
Reason for running so many times:
Some of these trojans' files can be deleted the first time; leaving some others; but on re-boot, they re-write the files that were deleted.
Running multiple times deletes most of it the first
time.

If you wish to have a great program, after you clean out Spyware/Advertising Ware:
SpyWare Blaster 3.2
Great, free, program that STOPS spyware, trojans, home page hijacks, etc, BEFORE they get into your computer. Check it out at CNET at link:

http://www.download.com/SpywareBlast...ml?tag=lst-0-2

Spyware Blaster is the best free program I have found for stopping Spyware.

If you attempt to use other programs with Norton 2005, you will probably find conflicts, that stop your computer.

Best wishes and best of luck,
fredg
