    It isn't specifically the british litre, it s the metric system and Canada uses it too

    1 gallon =4.546 litres

    Actually there are two types of gallons: the US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, and the Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters, or about 1.2 US gallons. When you asked about "British" gallons you probably mean the Imperial, which is used in Commonwealth countries and Ireland (so that would include Canada too, Tickle).
