Basic Pharmacology ?

I am trying to understand the process of a drug going through distribution then metabolism. If a drug gets to it's receptor site, binds, then does whatever action it's supposed to do there, what happens afterwards? Does it stay on the receptor site? Does it "fall off" the receptor? How does it do it's job then get excreted from the body?
