hamster concerns

Hi! Am an unfortunate new hamster owner here. My hamster died after 9 days under me , just about to take her to the vet today but it was too late. I don't know why but her eyes has been closed the past 2 days and just yesterday night, she was still active I presume as she was still playing and running around the wheel. After a few days I got her, her bottom part (the chest/belly/anus) looks wet from water and urine, could that be the reason she died? Or could it be the heat? It's really hot here in the Philippines, around 35C. Also I was bitten 2 days ago as I was trying to cotton swab her eyes with lukewarm water in hopes of clearing dirt, etc., should I go see a doctor just to be sure? Thanks!

You probably bought your hamster when it was sick. And when they have a wet behind - they are really sick, there isn't much you can do. The life expectancy of a hamster is roughly 2 years. We had one and it lived 5 months with us. He got very stinky, had the wet behind and was not active. Now, we have got another one - bought at the same time at the same store as the one that died. She is doing fine.

Was the hamster in an area that the temp. was 35C? That is way to hot. They like mild temps, lots of shade (or dim lighting) and peace and quiet.

Thanks for the prompt reply, glad to know that it wasn't entirely my fault that it died, just hope that its now resting in peace. Yeah it was wet from the chest area to the anus. Seemed like the anus part was wet with urine too as it was yellowish. It was weird, she did not have that disease when I bought it, just after 2-3 days under me. Do they just contract the disease (I think its called wet tail?) like suddenly? And what about me, do I have to go to the doctor or something? The bite wound area is now completely healed, no signs of infections or whatsoever.

If there aren't signs of infection at the bite site - I would say you are fine.
Wet Tail can come about for a number of reasons. Mine had this for about a week before he died. He was very smelly!
Alot of times when they get stressed out - their system can not handle it and they get sick.

She could have got a cold so its eyes were sticky and kept shut thats what happend to my hamster or i think it had wet tail because you sd it was wet near its bottom. thats caused by stressfulness or ruff handling.
Get back to me. xx
