What to do about slander, harassment and defamation of character
My friends ex, for many many months now, has been blogging and video blogging about him, me and a whole slew of friends. None of us, including myself, have given a d*** about what he says... until recently.

Recently, he's been running his mouth and making my family think I'm a bad person. I decided to 'investigate' these blogs and video blogs and I was completely disgusted -- I'm accused of everything from being a 'loser' a 'whore' an 'emo' fagot' to being 'paid with drugs' in return for making up lies (even though these videos are clear evidence he can't shut his mouth) He's accusing friends of mine to be hosting parties with under aged drinking. Other friends he says have 'child pornography' on their computers. (If you listen to other videos where this statement first originated, he states that he doesn't even know this and he's 'just assuming' -- an assumption based on NOTHING --assumption that can't just be thrown out into the public like that)

I have a good dozen people who could testify against this child-of-a-22-year old. Some of these people he's saying these things about are 30+ years old and have careers and such. I myself work in the school system for the town as a paraprofessional ~ saying that I'm a 'druggie' and get paid in drugs for info can RUIN MY FUTURE. Saying my friend has under aged parties or the other one has illegal material on his computer can also RUIN their careers. FOREVER.

He's 22 years old, this has been going on for almost a year now and I've just had it now. I would normally NEVER get involved in these kinds of things -- I have a career, I go to college, I'M AN ADULT -- but this is out of control I'm not letting him ruin MY life like he has his. What can I do about this? How far can I go? Will the police help out? I don't want just a restraining order -- I want to nail this child to the wall and teach him that his immature behaviors have consequences.

Go to your local police and see what they can do about this.

Also, contact an attorney. I would setup a face to face app with an attorney. Lay your situation out. And ask what and how he can help? As well as how much it will cost you? Good luck. Hope you post back with information from time to time. Interested in the out come of this situation.

First, I doubt that the police will be able to help you. Defamation isn't a crime in the U.S.; for some very valid historial and constitutional reasons. Instead it is a "civil matter". That means that you would have to sue him for damages. Consult with an attorney if you wish, but I believe most attorneys would be very reluctant to take such a case (unless if the client is a celebrity) for the simple reason that it can be very difficult to establish substantial money damages.
