military pay

I was in the Air Force for 10 years. I got a new degree and they said they could not use me in that capacity. They told me to switch services. I went into the public health service. I completely closed out of the Air Force but after I left they continued to put paychecks into my account. I informed them in writing and called them on the telephone. They sent me an incorrect w-2 form for my taxes. I paid $9,999. in taxes. Then they finally realized the mistake. I sent them back all of the $ they had put into my bank account. Now they want $15,000 in interest and fees and taxes they paid to the government. I did not do anything wrong but they keep calling this my debt and say I must re-pay them. They have sent my name to a collection agency. I called a lawyer and he wants 2500 up front. I just got through paying over $5,000 in taxes for this past year and now don't have a nickle to my name. I now work in a prison and have had about 7 days of vacation in 2 years-must I keep working and working and ginving all of the $ back for mistakes made on my behalf-even when I tried to correct them? I have been a nurse for over 20 years and have a masters degree, but I have nothing to show for it but lots of work, work more work and taxes.
