Hospital Bills

I have a hospital bill for my daughter from one year ago, I haven't received any notice of the bill. And then Monday I was served papers that I was being sued for the bill. And I called and spoke to their lawyer, and was informed that now not only did I have to pay the bill but had to pay him $300.00 for his fees. If I pay the bill off before it goes to court do I have to pay his fees?
He was the rudest lawyer I have talked to. I was just trying to find out what the bill was for and he just said I would pay it.
What do you suggest I do next?
Thank you for you help?
