ANY signer on the loan can be the defendent in a judgement. The creditor is not obligated to go after all signators. They can opt to just go after the ones they think they can get money from. Once a judgement is obtained, even if its obtains against one or more signators, the creditor can still only go after one of them.

Yes as Scott said, and often they will go after the one with the most money or the best job, since they figure he can make the best payments of pay the loan.

That is why of course you only do business and co sign with people that you know will and can pay ( and best not to co sign at all) If they refuse to pay thier share, you can get stuck with it, then you may have to try and sue them for thier shares after you pay the debt off.

If two parties are legally responsible for the debt in question then garnishments can be levied against one or both parties (once a judgement has actually been obtained.)
