Do I have to pay my late husbands medical bills? he died 5 months ago we own nothing he left 12.91 in his checking account and that is it.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is very hard to go through times like this with having bills held over your head. I can relate as my mother is going through this herself after my father passed last year at the age of 72.

Unfortunately, since you were married, you are liable for the debt. What my mother has found out is that in speaking with the billing department of the hospital(s) my father was in, there are charities that help with the expenses when the surviving spouse cannot afford the costs. However, it takes the surviving spouse to go in and talk to the department with proof of living expenses, etc, before the charities will provide help.

I'm so sorry - I was widowed last year. Not an easy path and the medical bills just never seem to stop. I've had my hands full trying to sort through them and he was well insured.

What State are you in? There's a little bit of difference between States.
