Can I sue for slander?

I have been falsely accussed of filing a lawsuit against a business. I use to work there and then I quit for a different job. The owner is pissed off because his business has suffered since I left the management position, so he has been telling all his customers that I am suing him for an accident I had while working for him over a year ago. It was not anything serious and I don't have any long term effects from it and I have never even thought about suing him. Now everyone that still goes to this business is under the impression that I am suing the owner and they all hate me now. They won't speak to me when I see them, they talk badly about me to other customers, they have total comtempt for me now. A few of the customers who still go to this business do talk to me and have told me what is going on. They don't even like going to this place any more because that is all that everyone talks about. The customers use to love me there. They were all very sad when I told them that I would be leaving. Now, from what I understand, the owner and his employees have told anyone and everyone who will listen that I am suing him. The owner and his current employees now have everyone believing that I am this horrible person who is going to sue him and take his business away. This has even gone as far as to where I work now. People I work with now go to this business and have been told the samethings about me. I can't very well go to each and everyone of these people and tell them that it is not true and I am not the person that I am being made out to be. What should I do? The owner even went so far as to tell my own son this story. My son is the one who informed me that the owner is telling everyone that I am suing him. I live almost right across the street from this business. I use the same store as most of the customers and most of them live in my neighborhood. I feel like a total outcast and I haven't done anything wrong. This is a restuarant with a small bar area and the people that live in this neighborhood spend a lot of time in there.

As you stated in your title, "Can I sue for slander?".

Yes. Sue him for defamation of your character.

I would recommend contacting a lawyer to assist you with this.

Yep sue him, get the best attorney you can get.

Now first be sure that he was not sued over this accident. Did you collect workers comp or health insurance benifits. Make sure they did not sue to collect money from him for payments to you.

But as long as the event did not happen, you have a great suit.

No, I never collected workmans comp and the business did not provide insurance. I just took a week off of work to heal and that was it. I have no idea why he is telling people this except for the fact that he is mad because his business has suffered since I left.

Go for it, when you get rich off of this one, and need to give some money to charity, I can recommend a great elderly mission. This case makes me like lawyers again, I have been down on them all week.

Good luck

Hello sadie:

There are two parts to a lawsuit. The first part is liability, and it looks like you can prove that. However, you have suffered no monetary damages. Their slander humiliated you and makes you angry, but you can't be compensated for those things.

I think he or a good attorney will get this one also.

Loss of esteem in the community, the loss of friends, the mental stress and suffering he has from the loss of these friends. He will most likely require years to feel safe to go back into the community freely.

And this stress makes it not possible to have enjoyable free exersie of his home since he has to see this business, so he perhaps need to move.

I beleive that there can be some real loss found, and once that real loss is found, then the punitive and other pain and suffering penalties can be added.

** before I get attacked on this, I put little thought into possible ideas, I am sure an active personal injury attorney can find something after reviewing this closely.

I agree with Fr Chuck.

Loss of reputation, loss of character are grounds that you can sue for damages in.
