strange odor in only 2 doorjams of house

i went into a friends house and there is an unreconizable odor in 2 doorjams of the house. one is right after you come in and entering kitchen and the other is from other side of kitchen going to the bedrooms. it has given headaches to my friends husband and her son. it also has a burning sensation in all their throats and eyes. it almost has a hint of bleach smell. hydro came in and tested for gas leak and carbon monoxide. it almost leaves you feeling a little lightheaded. help please.

Have they tried sealing the door jambs with sealant to see if that blocks the odor and the irritation to the throat and eyes? It may be some sort of insulation that is causing the problem.

There is nothing in a door jam that should give off an odor. However, door jams often have light switches beside them. Remove the cover plates, look and sniff. Other people have complained of a fishy smell to burned or melted plastic.

Nice job. Burning bakelite could smell like bleach, just not as strong.

Also there is a good chance that 3 way switches are on both jambs controlling the same light.

Electrical problem most likely.
