Maple tree - growth on roots

Hi: I dug up a small maple tree to move it and found that the roots had a lot of small growths on it. It reminded me of what I had seen previously, nematodes?, growth on the clover, pea and other nitrogen fixing family. Does anyone know if that is what it is, or is it some disease which would cause me to burn the little tree and not plant a larger one in it's place?? Thanks. jjpele
