How do i find out who died in my house?

I have looked all over the internet and for some reason I can't find out who died in my house. I think we have a ghost and i want to know how it died. Peacefully or violently. One night i was laying in bed and i saw a dark figure standing next to my bed. I blinked and it was still there. I asked if someone was there and it just dissapeared. It was a horrible experience. I knew before that that we had a ghost but it was a white figure that would go up and down the stairs and it never scared me and i never felt threatened by it. But the dark figure I was very frightened by. PLEASE HELP ME!!
