electrical burning odor

We have a problem with a strong odor in the upper floor of our house.
We woke this morning to the smell, which is in all of the upper rooms.
It happened once before, & we thought it was the computer, which we turned off, & the smell seemed to clear over night, with windows open.
Then we had a problem with our heating system, & were told the fan had burned out, so we replaced it. We assumed that was the smell, & we didn't smell it again until this morning.
We have checked all the outlets, & nothing is hot. The computer has been off.
Our heating/AC system is located in the basement, & there doesn't seem to be an odor down there, or on the first floor of the house. The weather has been very hot, & the air conditioner has been running quite a bit. When we had the odor before, it was during cooler weather.
Any suggestions? (We will call the furnace people again.)
Thank you

i know this might sound stupid, but have you checked all plugs and plug sockets?

i would get someone in to investigate as you can never be too careful with electricity

All outlets have been checked - none is hot. There is no smoke or haze in the house.
