If you are asking about Sickle Cell Anemia, then there is a wealth of information about it available on the following link. Sickle Cell Anemia - Definition, Description, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Prognosis, Prevention

The link that I have provided and subsequent information on it is in no way meant to preclude the information that you might get from people on this site, however. I am hopeful that you will get much more information from the people on this site. At least what I have have provided as far as information is concerned might be a start for you in your exploration of finding information about what may be wrong health wise with your relative.

Sickle cell anemia is a disorder of the red blood cells that affects the African American population. In times of stress or illness, specifically when the body is not getting enough oxygen for one reason or another, the red blood cell seems to collapse on itself forming the shape of a sickle.

Sickle cell crisis is an emergent situation, and is extremely painful, usually requiring immediate medical intervention, to get that red blood cell back to it's original shape.

A simple blood test is all it takes to diagnose sickle cell. If she had this disease she would have known it since she was a young child.
