Not sure if you mean a fractured rib. If you do I know what it feels like it recently happened to me.

Main symptom I had was yes, it hurt to take a breath. It HURT A LOT! First few days it hurt even to move the slightest also. Ended up staying in bed for about three days and doing as little as possible. Then I had to go back to work and just had to brave it out. Does it hurt when you cough or sneeze? That is also something I felt.

Again not sure what you mean by rib out of place is it fractured? Above is just my personal experience on a fractured rib. Sounds like you should have another conversation with your doctor and get more details.

Again I think you need to have further conversations with your doctor and make sure you understand what he/she is saying...

Hi. I actually just got back from the chiropractor earlier today because I had 4 ribs out of place that needed to be put back in place. I was having chest pain for weeks. I even went to have my heart checked. Then I remembered that about 5 years ago I had a rib out of place which caused me chest pain. I went to the chiropractor today and I had 4 ribs out of place! I'm not even sure how I did it. My doctor said it can happen very easily in some people and you often don't even know how or when it happened. I hope this is some help to you.

OK that is some help but I wanted to know how long it hurts well let me put it this way I have had pains in my chest since nov/dec 08 I hade my heart check all kinds of x-rays cat scans I was told that I had a lung nodule (right side) my doc said it was nothing to worry about because I live in Ohio and it could be histoplasmosis?not cancer, still very scary well I was still having chest pains so I was told I had a rib out of place 3 of them my ciro.popped them back and that I also have scoliosis (10 degree) well I had my ribs popped back in place two weeks ago so when am I going to stop hurting I'm so sick of hurting for months now and all the meds.keeping me sleepy! I just want to know how long pain last's for a rib out of place that gets put back. I heard that some people get pain free as soon as they get popped back in place?I don't know I'm trying to figure out if my lung is something to do with the pain because doc's can not tell the difference in a long nodule is cancer or not unless it grows.they did no test's but an x-ray like I said back in nov/dec.so can any one tell me any thing about ribs please my doc will not do no more x-rays of my lungs because he said my pain is my ribs?I can not tell the different pain from rib or lungs.thanks tawnya!!

I suppose if the pain is due to a displaced rib, pressure with your finger on the rib would cause pain? Have you tried doing that? If it doesn't pain when pressed, why would it pain at all, I would say.

Each rib is attached to the breastbone in front, by means of soft cartilage.
This cartilage sometimes gets avulsed (by something like a sudden movement or while lifting a heavy weight, for instance) and causes its rib / ribs to get displaced.

An avulsed rib can pain for months on end, though topical analgesics may give temporary relief.

To help ease your stress, here's what happened with me... I had pain in my chest for weeks after my ribs were popped back into place. In fact, I still have mild pain occasionally. Do you do a lot of lifting? When my daughter was younger, I popped a rib out of place just by carrying her up the steps. I had chest pain for months before finding out it was a rib out. Recently, as I had mentioned before, I had 4 ribs out and I still don't know how I did it. My chiropractor said to be careful for the next few days after he adjusted my ribs. He said it's possible that they can pop back out of place. That's why I asked if you lift heavy things... children, laundry baskets, anything that would put pressure on your rib cage or chest. Did you know that you can also have a pulled muscle in your chest from lifting things? A doctor told me that this pain feels very similar to pain you would have if you had heart problems. As far as your lungs are concerned, I understand your worry. Four years ago I found out that I had thyroid cancer when my daughter was only 3 years old. My advice to you concerning your lung is to get a second opinion. Do some research and find a good doctor that specializes in that area. Take your x-rays to him and see what he says. Also, stress in itself can cause chest pain. Try to relax. I know it's hard. If you have faith in God, pray to Him on a regular basis and ask him to guide you in the right direction concerning your health. I have received much guidance and direction, and also, peace of mind, through praying. Remember that God has a name, Jehovah. Use His name when you pray and you will immediately notice a difference in your life. Pray to know the truth about Him and He will answer your prayer. You will find happiness and peace of mind now, and also have a wonderful hope for the future. Remember to use His name, Jehovah. Try it... I promise your life will change.

Hi Tawnya. Holding a baby while you're cleaning puts a great strain on your upper body. I know you have to hold him and you should! Babies need a lot of tender loving care. I do think that you may be straining your upper body though. If you do have a pulled chest muscle, it may be having a hard time healing since you are not resting it. Every time you pick up your baby and swing him on one hip, you are using your chest muscles. If you have a strained chest muscle, it may be having a hard time healing. I went through this when my daughter was your son's age. She has always been very big for her age. I am very small, so holding her and trying to do things around the house with her put a strain on my upper body. I had ribs out of place and even went to the emergency room once with chest pain and the doctor told me it was a pulled chest muscle. You asked me to describe the pain... Well the pain for both the ribs out and chest muscle pull were very similar... a dull ache that would occur randomly. At times it hurt more often than others and then there would be times where I would go a day or two and not feel it and then it would come back. The chest muscle pull can continue on if not given the chance to heal. I've had chest muscle pulls more recently from lifting other thins such as heavy laundry baskets up the stairs. What kind of pain are you having and how often are you having it?

I recently went to the hospital because I felt a lump on right side of my upper torso. I was scared it was cancer because when I breathe hard or twist weird it sends like tingling down my arm. They told me after x-rays that they think I have a popped out rib and there is nothing they can do about it. The doctor also said if it don't heal in 6 months it will stay like that. It sucks because it hurts sometimes and other times not. I need to find something to help.

A chiropractor can pop your rib back in place. I've had it done several times. I'm not sure why the doctor told you nothing could be done about it. Find a chiropractor and make an appointment right away. You will feel so much better after it is popped back into place.

This is all very helpful to me. I have a higher rib that is very mobile. I am sure it is a combination of lifting babies while cleaning, and while pregnant. I also read that this can be caused by just sleeping against a car handle, starts deteriorating the support. I'm remembering my last pregnancy, baby nestled under rib while I tried to sleep in that awful side position! It is not painful at all to me however I can feel it constantly and at times begin to feel a little clostriphobic, like an on going annoyance and I just have to force myself to relax so I don't freak out! I went to my doctor and he was sympathetic and offered an X-ray but told me to wait until it was at it's peak of annoyance. He said to insure getting stabbed by the rib was not a concern. It had been 40 days by the time it peaked and the referral had expired. I had to get another referral (wonderful military) So I went in, to a different doctor because it's whoever is available and this doctor was a.. . Prick. He acted like I waisted his time and that getting an X-ray would just waist more time. He said "No doctor is going to operate on ribs unless they are broken" I wasn't even aware that was the only solution to consider. That was yesterday and I now plan on seeing a chiropracter! I do not have pain so I know it may be silly, but what if your rib felt like a loose tooth! I do occasionaly have a spike in my chest, and have had severe pain in my upper back, which after reading about slidding rib sydrome could be related to pinching of the nerves from out of place ribs. Gosh that doctor was ignorant!!

Hi, I have had a popped rib for years (around 10 years) I don't know how it happened but when I first recognized it I figured because it didn't hurt it was no problem, so for 10 years I forgot about it and now I am starting to feel a small ache where the rib is. I don't really now what to do about it, I don't know whether to leave it or whether to go to the doctor, the doctor probably is the safe bet.

I have had a problem now since June o9... I am now pretty sure that I have a rib out because your ribs are connected from front to back and my right back muscle really hurts when I lift, but it caused a muscle to come over top of my bottom rib ( the one that is out) and you can actually see the tiny muscle through my skin... it is obviously not supposed to be there and it hurts when it is touched. My chiro doesn't do the traditional chiro he does pressure relief which is not helping my rib. Has anyone had this problem where the muscle is actually over the bottom rib and not underneath it where it should be?

If your ribs come out-of-socket all the time, or several ribs come out-of-socket for no apparent reason, you might have beginning stages of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a rare disorder that makes your joints dislocate or hyperextend easily. The problem is that the ligaments aren't strong enough to keep your joints in socket at all times. I posted questions just like yours a few years ago, and this disorder took me years to find. Hope that's not it. Good luck!

Well I know it has something to do with a certain muscle in my back and no they don't come out of place all the time... I am going to see a doctor about this, this week. But it happened to me when I went back to work a very physical job and had just been off on E.I for 9 months and had brain surgery so I sat in hospital beds for weeks at a time in that 9 month period... My body went through a lot and then going right into a very physical job that is when the muscle in my back got screwed up and has effected my rib ever since. The chiropractor I have been seeing since I started my job doesn't do what I am used to so maybe my old chiro can help who knows, but thank you for your reply. Hope they fixed what was hurting you.

Well I went to the chiropractor I used to go to and I found out that I had 3 ribs out of place in the back ( that explains the muscle in the back being uncomfortable ) I am going back in two weeks to make sure everything stays where it should...

Hello, I think I have done something to my ribs too and I thought that maybe I have a poppet out rub too... But when I press the side of my ribs it doesn't really hurt much but it seems like my breathing isn't as clear as it could be? Could that be a sign? And I don't know it this is a symptom at all but since I have had this going on it seems like my stomach has gotten bloated lol I didn't know if that was a sign or an affect. Do you think I have popped a rib?

I got hit in the ribs helping load things, hurt to breath, cough, even trying to wipe my butt, didn't get to rest kept going till about a week later- finally got to rest-infact resting now. But, I think it was only bruised, but I can sneeze and cough now w/o hurting too bad. I kept cold packs on it 3 times a day, Tylenol and a wrap for a little while, while moving around. But, now when I bend certain ways I can feel and even hear the rib bones move around and still hurts to touch it, it feels like it's a little puffy- maybe muscle sore around them swelled up(it's almost 3 weeks now), but I think they may be out of place and sounds like slipping against each other cause you can hear them move and my wrists are double jointed where you can see the bone move when I twist my wrist back and forth and the ribs remind me of that motion . My wrist used to pop when I did that too, but not no more- I quit moving my wrist like that on purpose, when younger thought it was neat to hear the pop and see the bones move under the skin. Got a little carpool (sp?) tunel in it now. So, anyway don't know if they are slipping, out of place or what on my ribs but I know they are at least two of them feeling like they know the tango when I bend certain ways left side. Should I just ignore it and hopefully it will go away- since it is a fresh injury. Maybe it will heal with time.
