calcium in blood

My husband is 27 yrs. old and already is on blood pressure medication. During a routine blood test, it came back to have "elevated calcium." I know what calcium is, but why is too much in the blood bad, what can cause this, and what are the possible effects it may have? In a month they want him to do more tests, and we don't want to wait a month to find out what this is all about.
