pc shuts down after installing a new power supply

I'm learning how to put together a pc from scratch. I got new ABIT motherboard, new Coolermaster case, MAXTOR hdd, 650w ANTEC power supply,etc. After several minutes I plug in the power supply, the pc shuts down. Can anyone help me with this?

All the needed cables are plug in from the power supply. I already have the 6pin 12v cable from the power supply connected to its socket on the motherboard next to the CPU. The PCI-E cable is connected to the video card. IDE cables is connected to the DVd drive. IDe cable is connected to the floppy drive. And the SATA cables are connected to HDD. I looked at the power button wires for power led, hdd led, reset switch, etc. I know the red wire is positive, and the black wire is negative.

But what about a grren and a white wire? Is the green wire positive, and the white wire negative? If not, I mayh be putting them backwards. I try switching them anyway,but the pc still shuts down.

I wouldn't say the power supply is the culprit; I'd highly doubt 650W would be too little, even for a gaming machine. Just make sure all your power cables are connected.

What might be going on is that your PC is shutting itself down to protect itself. If the CPU isn't seated properly in its socket, the PC will detect this and shut itself down. Make sure your CPU is seated properly.

This could also be a sign of a bad CPU or motherboard. There is also the possibility that there is a short between the motherboard and something metal on the case, or even the case itself. These possibilities must be ruled out first, by trial and error.

Try running the computer without the motherboard inside the case, preferably laying it down on the anti-static packaging it came in. If the problem still occurs, I'd look towards the CPU or motherboard itself as the cause of the problem. Again, make sure the CPU is seated properly before going through all of this.
