Panasonic DVR and Direct TV

I have direct tv and I want to hook up my panasonic dvr to record shows. When I tried this the feed would not go through any of the boxes to the tv. Does anyone know if it is possible to run the Direct TV feed through the Panasonic DVR and the Direct TV box to the tv and record on the Panasonic DVR?
