Jump drive, cannot view files names or open them

Hi,
I used my jump drive to save a word file '97 at school. After that, when I "explore" the jump drive instead of the names of the files I see simbols, I cannot open them. My jump drive is a imation. I do have a lot of important files in my jump drive. Will I be able to use my jump drive again? Is it possible to recuperate the files that I have in it?
Thank you for your help
here is an attachment of what it looks like after I click on "explore"

Are you able to open the pdf file no problem? If so, I'll guess that the computer you're trying to open the files on does not recognize the Word '97 files. What version of Word is on the computer you've plugged the flash drive into?

I am able to open the pdf file.
The computer that I am using now has both word '97 and the newer version.

as you can see all the folders and briefcases I have in the jump drive now appear as something else. instead of their names there are only symbols.

I didn't hit the jump drive with anything, didn't get it wet, didn't pull it out until I saw the message "safe to remove"
Thank you for your help

I don't think the problem is the software word '97.
the problem is the jump drive
I don't know why is acting up!
I was able to use my jump drive before here in this computer but not anymore

Some manufacturer's have recovery programs. There are also recovery companies available, I think. Sometimes the mfr will have recovery options.

You always used "Safely remove hardware option" in the task bar, right?

I did tried to copy them but the computer(s) won't read the files. It ask me what program I want to use in order to open them. I tried opening them with word, notepad, paint...
none of them worked!
