Are you great friends with this person? How old is this person and does he still live with his parents?
If it was me I would call the police and file a report. If he has it and you know he has it. The police can contact this person and try to get it back for you. Do you still have the serial number of the camera? If so it will help. You also can press charges against this person for theft.

Sounds like maybe he'd rather have your camera than your friendship.
I don't know if the police can do much cause he can say there was no camera left in his car then it is his word against yours but it is worth a try.

He certainly doesn't sound like a good friend. If you have other friends that also know him could you maybe get them to ask him for you?
