Tracing unknown relatives

I have just found out that my "gramp" was not actually my Dads, Dad. It was revealed to my Dad just before he died that my Gran (deceased) had an affair back in the war with an American GI. My Dad was the product of that affair. We have noone to answer our questions and I am left without knowing what his name is, but desperate to know where I came from and to seek out my long lost relatives. My question is how would I trace someone without a name and with only brief information?
