MS Works Version 9 Database

I am using MS Works Version 9. I have a database started. In one of the fields I type in a combination of letters and numbers (Example: november76) and when I go to the next field it shows all "pound signs" instead of what I typed in. It will also pint just the pound signs in that field instead of what I entered. How can I change this to see and print exactly what I type? Thank you.
