NTLDR is compressed Press CAD to restart

HELP! I have been trying to fix this for 2 nights - searching the web for answers with my husbands laptop and trying to fix my computer at the same time. When I turn on the computer I get the red COMPAQ logo then a black screen appears with the message listed. I do not have the XP software and have tried a borrowed copy, but still get no where (besides circles in a continual loop). I think I blew it with the System Recover when this first happened - from what I have since read, I should have select to reset to the last working configuration - now it won't even give me the option. I can run the recovery (takes about 15 minutes) but it does nothing. When it asks if I want to try the built in repaid features of Windows XP, I get "You have canceled the recovery process.
I've tried everything suggested on sites - repeatedly hold the F8 key to boot, stand on one foot and drink your wine from the opposite hand - nothing works.

Anyone have any ideas? I know if push comes to shove, I can do a Destructive System recovery, but I'm afraid it is appropriately named. I don't want to loose everything on my HD.

Your link takes you to the right set of articls but to the SUS section for deploying SP2.

If you scroll down, you will find the section that Savage mentioned. Do not leave this area too soon. There is a lot of good information here.

Try this one.
