Laptop Monitor Totally Black

The other day I put my Toshiba Satellite laptop on sleep. I came back a few minutes later and pressed enter, it stayed black. I waited to see if it would come back a few minutes later. It didn't, so i turned it off and restarted it. The power light was on and I could hear the computer running but the screen stayed black. I than tried to get it working using the rescue disk but I had no luck. The computer was working fine up until than and its only a month old. Is it the monitor or something simple I can fix?

Could be a duff screen - I'd take it back straight away. I can't see any reason why it would fail to work.
