Itunes error message

I have an unusual problem. I have a Dell laptop XPS M140. I have used ITunes as my primary program for downloading music. No problems. Have updated several times when prompted. Recently I attempted to download music however cannot get Itunes to open. Keep getting an error message stating "ITunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." I do not use ITunes for typical music listening however have not had a problem before. Basically, I have attempted to check my audio settings but don't really know what I'm looking for..... Help would be greatly appreciated. I have attempted to re-download Itunes with no success. Please help!
