safty for painters

I'm currently am working painting a church now we are up 50 meters on ladders should we have something in case we all? We were told that its okay to have ladder on the roof and be on it but theres no safety equipment......we are all new to the job an our boss is cheep does anyone know anything about safely and painting.....or about health and safely law in Canada.
