I don't think it matters, in or above...in my opinion: cartridge. From what I've seen with my friends pools and now mine, it's cheaper and less time consuming. One buddy has a DE filter (don't know what it stands for but it makes a mess) back washes sand and that sand has to go somewhere. Several of my neighbors (ok: two of the three neighbors I know who have pools) have cartridge style and so do I. I love it! Yes, it needs washed but what comes out is just what would have landed in my yard anyway. You hose them off and put it back in. Takes me about a half hour including checking/adding chlorine pellets to the hopper. Do I sound like an ad yet?!?!
