Change "system" password in oracle

Hello members,

Recently i faced a different problem while accessing the Oracle server system password.

I am accessing the oracle database using remote connection. Oracle database present in windows server 2000.

I am able to access all other databases except "system", & "sys" username details.

i tried like this also..
i gave the username as: / as sysdba without giving hostname (with remote connection)

I am getting the message as : tns protocol adapter error

next time i gave the username as: / as sysdba and with the server host name.

Once again i get the error message that:
Conn[ect] logon as {sysdba/sysopera}/[Internal] where <logon>;;:<username>[/<password>] [@<connect-string>]|/

please provide the way for giving new password for system and sys users (lost old password) using remote connection..

With warmregards
hlp4al
