Salinity-property plot, "banana" diagrams

Hi,
I need to identify what some of the dangers are in using these diagrams to determine if a property is produced or consumed in an estuary? It illustrates the linear conservative mixing line, the source line above, and the sink line below. I think it may possibly be the influence of anthropogenic inputs not accounted for, and maybe the impact of biological processes within the estuary. I am not sure, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a million,
Marcy
