Transfering emails on server

Asked Feb 11, 2008, 05:54 AM — 2 Answers
Hello folks

We have had to create a new user profile for a retuning user.
We have due to policy and new naming convention, had to create our user a new profile
Our exchange server uses a roaming profile.
So, how I transfer his old emails to his new profile.
Where should I be looking within his old profile for his email pst/ost archive?
Many thanks for any help you can provide
Kind regards...

Exchange Profiles are kept on the PC in various places depending on the operating system. For Windows XP, it is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Some of these folders are hidden, so will have to be viewing hidden files and folders. The OST files are secured files and can only be opened by the Exchange profile that created them. Even the same user with a different Exchange profile can not open these files.

For the email transfer, you can use ExMerge in the Exchange Support Tools. It is a utility that will connect directly to a Mailbox and export the email out to a PST file. You can then use the same ExMerge utility to import the PST file into another Mailbox.

To import the email from a PST to a Mailbox, you must name the PST file with the name of the Exchange Alias name of the user. For example, if you export the email from Jane Doe (alias name JANEDOE) to a PST file, the file will be name JANEDOE.PST. You would then rename the file to JOHNDOE.PST in order to import the email into the John Doe mailbox.

If the mailbox is larger than 2GB, you will have to export it to multiple PST files. DO NOT attempt to create a PST file larger than 2GB. IT WILL FAIL.

ExMerge is a versatile utility. You will need to create a specific user for your ExMerge use. The user that performs the ExMerge will not work if it is a standard Exchange Admin account because of the DENY permissions for Send As in the typical accounts. Read the ExMerge documentation for use and setup.

Mr Chuckhole of Huston, Texas - it worked a dream.
It failed first time around but the log clearly showed the old hidden account name we should have been adding to the ExMerge utility. Once we had this its was done and dusted in under two minutes.
Brilliant - thanks for the help.
(now, if only I can get this remote web mail gremlin fixed?!)
