| | | Linksys router configuration Hi,
I recently bought a Linksys wireless router. I have one desktop and laptop I am able to access the Internet when I hardwired my laptop / desktop to Modem. (which is what is there now). . I want to connect my laptop in "wireless" mode to the router and access internet. I tried accessing wireless but it didn't work out. So, I hardwired router to laptop and tried to access "192.168.1.1" router configuration page. It is showing page not found. I checked ipconfig/all from command prompt and it shows ip address as : 169.254.164.33 and subnet mask as 255.255.0.0.
It shows default gateway as blank. I am not at all able to access the web page of linksys router. I did a reset (using the switch) of the router also. But no luck.
To cross verify whether it is a problem in my laptop i connected my modem (hardwired) to laptop , in which case I was able to access the Internet.
Please help me.
Thanks

Pay to call Curlyben for advice ($1/min) | The manuals that come with Linksys routers are very good.
Reread it and follow the instructions.
Make sure the machine is wired to the router and then reboot it and you should pick up a 192.168.1.x IP address. |

| Yes I did as per the instructions given in the manual. No luck so far. Trying it for nearly 2 to 3 days. |

Pay to call ScottGem for advice ($.75/min) | Call Linksys tech support, they are excellent and 24/7 toll free.
You can make sure yotu system is set to automatically obtain an IP. But it woulds like your system isn't getting an IP from the router. |

| To factory reset the router:
1. Power the router off by unplugging the power
2. Hold in the reset button
3. power on the router and wait for the RED light on the front to light up.
4. release the reset button.
Connect your computer WIRED to the router
Open a command prompt type: ipconfig /release
type: ipconfig /renew
now try to access the config page

| To avoid the command lines for renewing your address you can also right click and select "repair". |

| first of all, can you even ping the Linksys? You may either
A have the wrong port plugged in
B a bad cable
C a bad router.
Take it back to the store, exchange it and try again. |

| The 169.x.x.x address you are getting is part of a MS feature called APIPA. "Auto Private IP Adressing or something like that)
Anyway, Windows uses this feature to self configure it's IP stack in the event the network stack is configured to look for a DHCP server and one isn't avail. MS claims that in APIPA mode the client machine checks for a DHCP server every five minutes. If one comes online it is suppose to accept settings from that server and shut off APIPA.
So.... I would do all of the following.
1.) Default your routers settings.
2.) Verify you have the correct network cables (not cross overs)
3.) Verify you have all the ports plugged in correctly
4.) Exchange the unit where you bought it
These linksys routers are made to provide you with a 5 minutes plug and play experience. Either something minor is being overlooked or the unit is bad. |

| I hope your problem has already been long since resolved. If so, and if the information you received here helped, it would be nice if you let us know how you finally resolved the problem.
My LinkSys router has an IP of 192.168.15.1. That's what your Default Gateway should probably be. |
