Ethernet wiring installation.

2 Answers I'm installing a piece of equipment which I want to be able to program remotely. I have run Cat5e cable about 350 ft from equipment to server room. Do I need a switch or repeater for the cable being 350 ft long? If so, how and what kind? Also, I believe the RJ45 connector wiring needs to be T568B but not sure. Does it matter? |

| Both ends ar typically set up as T568B connections unless you need a crossover cable which would have T568A at one end. 350ft is pushing the specifications of Cat5e UTP. It likely will work though. You can increase your odds by decreasing the number of connection points to patch panels, wall plates, etc. To each of these type of connections, maintain the twist in the wire as close to the connection as possible. The possibility of crosstalk occurs most at these connections and at sharp bends in the cabling. Adding switching gear will not amplify the end-to-end connection. Only a repeater will do this and it is worth considering the use of fiber optic cabling instead of spending money on this type of gear. | ||||

| Chuckhole, our network uses T568B everywhere else I believe. I guess that's what I'll use. The manufacturer of the PC that we're connecting to said it didn't matter which one we used. I'm going to try it without the repeater 1st I guess. The cable goes point A to Point B. I've eard a few different opinions on the switch/repeater issue now. Thanks, Dave | ||||
